De Havilland Essay

Executive Summary De Havilland is a major player the Canadian aircraft manufacturing industry. Founded in 1928 by a British company, De Havilland has had multiple acquisitions by various organizations including the government. As of 1992, the organization was co-owned by the government of Ontario with 49% shares and Bombardier Inc. with 51%. The company’s strategic goal is to keep their competitive advantage by focusing on cost reduction through negotiating long-term contracts with various vendors to capture economies of scale as well as set a fixed cost to secure price stability. Although de Havilland’s existing flap shroud supplier was unwilling to accept the renegotiated 25% discount to the current price, the company had more than a year’s inventory left with the contract expiring in 1993. De Havilland decided that it would be appropriate to solicit suppliers. Nine submissions were received, with the cost difference between the lowest and highest bid at $2,061,180. Based on the information provided it was evident that Marton Enterprise had the most attractive proposal. Issue Identification Long Term – Strategic * Contract between de Havilland and Dollard Plastics of Montreal, Quebec for flap shrouds for Series 300A airplane will be expiring at the end of 1993. * Dash 8 airplane represented 60-65 per cent of de Havilland’s total manufacturing costs * De Havilland buyer tried to negotiate 25% discount from Dollard, but was rejected * De Havilland’s BSB is trying to implement cost reduction strategy by: * Partnering with smaller base of vendors to capture economies of scale * Commit to long-term contracts for a span of five years with firm, fixed prices Environmental and Root Cause Analysis Founded in 1928 by a British company, De Havilland has become a significant part of the Canadian aircraft manufacturing industry. As of 1992, the organization was co-owned by the government of Ontario that held 49% of the shares and Bombardier Inc. owning the remaining 51%. With multiple acquisitions by various companies and the government over the past half-century, the organization has implemented several activities into their operations. These activities implemented in different stages of the supply chain have successfully provided versatility in satisfying customers’ needs, from procurement to production. During Boeing’s ownership, de Havilland experienced tremendous evolution in their corporate processes. In particular the purchasing cycle is a noteworthy system developed during this time. In Exhibit 1 of the case study the diagram demonstrates the step-by-step procurement process the company goes through when it encounters a design change/new design, requiring sou rcing of a new part that has not been previously purchased before. Parties that are involved are mainly composed of representatives from Finance and Material departments. The level of management involvement depended on the size of the contract. De Havilland’s current issue was selecting a new vendor to source flap shrouds from. Dollard Plastics, a company based in Montreal, Quebec has been supplying flap shrouds for their Series 300A airplane, but their contract was about to expire at the end of 1993. With parts costs of the De Havilland’s Dash 8 accounting for 60-65% of the organization’s total manufacturing costs, the purchasing department attempted to request a 25% discount from Dollard as a strategy for cost reduction. However, their request for a lower price was rejected. With the failed renegotiation, the procurement process had to move back to bidder selection board stage. In addition to the cost reduction strategy mentioned earlier, de Havilland’s objective was to partner with a smaller base of vendors to take advantage of economies of scale. They would like to establish long-term cooperative contracts (i.e. five years) with fixed pricing so frequent negotiations won’t be necessary . Based on the nine RFQ submissions from various vendors, Marton Enterprise Inc. offered the lowest prices. With the comprehensive data and additional information that Kim Tomar obtained, it was evident there was great potential in a long-term business partnership with Marton. The difference between Dollard and Marton’s normalized bids total for the program was a whopping $2,061,180 ($2,810,174- $748,994), which could be a substantial saving amount de Havilland would be making. Marton has stated in their pricing proposal that their bid is a stand-alone pricing. This could mean it would be difficult for de Havilland to discuss a lower price than the proposed. The vendor has also stated from past history material costs typically increased 4% to 6% per year, and with that assumption which they have accounted they are willing to enter into a firm fixed price proposal with de Havilland from August 1992 to July 1997. Although Marton’s initial bid amount is quite attractive, de Havilland will have to take into account the possibility of Marton overstating their position in order to acquire the bid. This may become a strategic barrier that could become costly down the road. Another reason for such a significantly lower price offered by Marton could be the fact they may be compromising the quality of the materials or services. Lastly, it could just plainly be that Marton operates more efficiently than other vendors, thus able to incur higher savings. Whatever the case may be, de Havilland should conduct a thorough quality analysis of vendor production to determine whether Marton’s quality and cost levels are aligned with de Havilland’s expectations. Based on the reviews of past purchasing trends, forecasts conducted by representatives from the Finance and Material department, the Bidder Selection Board should have an idea of how much the parts should cost and if the prices submitted are realistic. De Havilland should also keep the other vendors who offered close bids in consideration (i.e. DAS Composites and Lakesides Industries). These bids would help in the negotiation process in strategically obtaining a potential value. With Kim Tomar’s recommendation to the Source Selection Board, SSB should establish low, target and authority price levels for one or more of the vendors and see which group provides the best offer. In terms of power relationships, it seems like it is a fairly level playing ground for both de Havilland and Marton. Based on the comprehensive data provided by Marton and the side documents obtained by Tomar it seems like Marton’s well-prepared proposal has gained them a high amount of seller power in the negotiation. At the same time, with the favorable bids de Havilland received from other vendors, they would be able to use those bids to help negotiate a good deal. At the bottom line though, it depends on how much power each company has to make decisions or if both would require approval from the parent companies. Alternatives Alternative 1 – Select Marton Enterprise as vendor based on analysis conducted for negotiation Advantages: Â  1. Lowest bid out of all nine bid submissions, providing substantial savings in manufacturing costs, more than the original targeted 25% discount 2. Establish a long-term contract with fixed pricing reducing the need for renegotiations 3. Potential for long-term relationship that would greatly improve operational efficiencies Disadvantages: 1. Quality and service might be compromised to reap savings 2. Puts de Havilland at risk if partnership with Marton is a poor decision (poor quality, service), may cause ripple effect 3. No BATNA in case negotiation does not succeed with Marton Enterprise Alternative 2 – Select Marton Enterprise, DAS Composites, and/or Lakeside Industries as vendors for negotiation . Advantages: 1. Provides a BATNA in case negotiation with Marton Enterprise fails 2. May open up other opportunities with sourcing of other parts 3. Can be used as a good negotiation tool Disadvantages: 1. Time consuming, may require more management involvement in the beginning to make decision Recommendation Based on the comprehensive data provided by Marton and the additional information that supports the credibility of the company, it would be best for De Havilland to select Marton Enterprise as vendor based on analysis conducted for negotiation. Implementation 1. After all the analysis and normalization has been conducted, de Havilland should inform Marton that they have been selected as the potential flap shrouds vendor. 2. As a team from the source selection board that is made up of Finance, Materials, Engineering and higher management personnel, they should meet with representatives from the other party to discuss the finer details of the agreement 3. They should review the proposal once again as a group and make modification of estimates 4. With a lawyer present, write out the outline of the contract 5. Once a draft has been made, each party should review it and schedule a time to meet again to sign the contract 6. Supply of flap shrouds will commence Monitor and Control De Havilland should assign staff from the source selection board that is already familiar with the vendor’s representatives to meet with the other party for periodic meetings. These meetings will allow both groups to review the progress, discuss issues that may have arise, and perform periodic quality assurance checkups/inspections. These periodic performance reviews and audits would confirm vendor compliance based on the agreement. Father of Modern Management Essay

The satisfaction of social needs is something that is achievable for most individuals. People can meet others who share similar interests by joining relevant clubs or associations and can mix with peers by attending relevant social functions. There are also dating agencies and dinner clubs for those who are seeking companionship. Where ‘social services’ are often required to assist is when a person is unable to easily or practically address these social needs, for example, someone who is elderly or housebound. Organisations such as Age Concern provide facilities like luncheon clubs and day centres, where individuals can benefit from company and conversation. They also collate information on other available resources like reminiscence and friendship groups (Age Concern, 2008). There are many routes to satisfying esteem needs. These include finding challenges of a vocational or academic nature or becoming part of a community group to gain a sense of achievement and social inclusion. For some, actively satisfying their own esteem needs can be a daunting process. Where ‘social services’ can assist is in providing accessible services in a variety of formats. One example is the Gateway Team, part of Poole Social Services (Borough of Poole, 2008) who list their aim as: â€Å"To enable adults in Poole to achieve, maintain and enjoy emotional and social well-being through the provision of a specialised service. † This includes free psychology and counselling services and workshops aimed at addressing anxiety and depression or providing assertiveness training. It also focuses on actively helping individuals to attain social inclusion by providing ideas for getting involved in the local community. Additionally, help is given by sourcing self-help material in the form of books or online resources. The Gateway Team is merely one localized example to highlight available support but this picture is replicated throughout the country with the provision of services available from local authorities, charities, volunteer groups and private organisations. Moving on to self-actualisation, it is important to differentiate between this level and the others within Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. As it is concerned with a constantly evolving set of ambitions rather than a basic set of needs, self-actualisation does not require a ‘safety net’ provided by social services. However, the social services framework can be utilised by enterprising individuals to help realise their potential. For example, undertaking volunteer work can build confidence, increase social networks and heighten the sense of well-being. Additionally, career prospects can be significantly enhanced as â€Å"73% of employers would employ a candidate with volunteering experience over one without† (TimeBank, 2008). In conclusion, this essay has demonstrated that social services, in the widest definition of the term, provide a wide range of facilities to address the Hierarchy of Needs as set out by Maslow. Although society is far from perfect and the eradication of neither poverty nor suffering is likely to be achieved, the assistance available in this country to those in need is comprehensive. Imagine what life was like for those most in need before the welfare state was established and before charities and other caring organisations became widespread. Consequently, the aim should be to bolster this supportive network and make it the very best it can be. Just like people, social services must continue to strive to fulfil its potential. The Past, Present and Future of the Webcam

The past, Present And Future Of The Webcam If only everyone was able to experience life the way we get to now. Sometimes I just wish that back then people were able to see and speak to a spouse away at war in a matter of seconds, or be able to see your parents while away at collage any time you want. Just being able to attend a work meeting in the comfort of your own home, People reuniting with their families it’s just wonderful. We are now able to do this today thanks to the Web camera. This technology spread like wildfire as soon as it was created, and is currently used by millions of people daily. This part of technology has a bright future. If only sooner, in 1993 the webcam was invented, the Cambridge University researchers asked themselves â€Å"how will we be able to see the coffee pot from our desks, to be able to see if it was empty or not, so that we won’t have to make and unnecessary trip to the Trojan room before the coffee was ready†. Their experiment furthered by them updating the images of the digital camera in the Trojan Room to the Internet. And it turns out that they created the world's first webcam in the process. In 2000 the web cam became widespread. It slowly started to make it into the homes of everyone around the world, and built into almost every cell phone. Today the webcam is truly a success. From celebrities to average Joe’s, hell! Even the president president uses the web cam. I feel like this piece of technology has truly helped so many people in life, emotionally and physically. Now you can even have a web cam conversation with up to 10 people, use it for video security, and even monitor your child from another room. My dad thought this was amazing; the first thing he said was â€Å"this is great! Now I can check on grandma. † I know for a fact that my dad and so many other people are so grateful for this webcam stage in technology. The future for the webcam looks exceedingly bright. Scientist says â€Å"future of webcam technology will include the hologram webcams†. This means that it will almost be as if the person on the other side of the computer is right there with you. Some say that soon most interviews will be even be held through the webcam. I, for one know that I’m excited about the future of the webcam. And I’m sure that there are millions of people are just as excited. We’ll wait and see what the future holds. We probably won’t realize how good the webcam has been to us until it’s gone. The past and the present of the webcam is truly a blessing, and the future will hopefully be one too. Like Albert Einstein said â€Å"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity† and this continues to be true to this day. Concrete Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3750 words

Concrete - Case Study Example Concrete remains the most essential part of our daily activity, as people need to take shelter in their homes, which are built with use of concrete. In fact, all buildings, roads, bridges that people use today are constructed with concrete. Some constructions like bridge over the Colorado River, built with strong concrete, are almost 250 yeas old. However, the changes in the manufacturing process, based on the research and developmental efforts have resulted in different types of concrete, being used presently. The use of admixtures and plasticizers to produce concrete of high strength is an example in this direction. The background of concrete goes back to the time of Egyptian pyramids, which are almost 5000 years old. Since then, many civilizations have used concrete for building and decorative purposes. The utilization of concrete is now found almost everywhere for projects involving infrastructure, building architecture and decorative construction work. Egyptian technicians used gypsum and lime that served as mortar for the bricks used for building pyramids, Bricks were made of mud and straw. This process continued for many centuries until 300 B.C. when Romans discovered the use of a material that is very near to the modern cement, as they built different architectural structures including Colossuim and Pantheon. This was during the period from 300 B.C. to 476 A. D., when the Romans also mixed animal fats in their cement that served as admixtures. Britisher named Joseph Aspdin, a stonemason discovered Portland cement in 1824. The name Portland came from the mining area, which produced the tough stone required for making such cement, which came from stones quarried on the Isle of Portland, in Great Britain. During the year 1828, Portland cement was used extensively in the construction of tunnel under Thames River Experimenting with the mixture of clay and ground limestone, Aspdin created a product that he named Hydraulic cement, as this mixture became

Art Fund Proposal Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Art Fund Proposal - Research Paper Example Painting is one among them. The paint market sector can be divided into two major categories, industrial coatings and decorative paints based on the end-use of the particular products. Besides segmentation based on the end use of the particular painting product, markets can also be divided based on the quality and price of the product. Paints are generally divided into three price and quality categories: medium, premium and economy. The size of each group differs by market area and country, depending on the local painting traditions, standard of living, styles of construction and available materials, the general construction and decorating trends as well as industrial activity and renovation. Art market is a network of worldwide fiscal activity in major world cities: London, Berlin, New York, Geneva, Paris, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Milan. Art market subsists only in cities with cultural and financial capital that attracts continuing concentration of marketplace activity. The US guides the world marketplace for modern art with 50% of sales level. Aggregate sales volume and pricing across the art market from every source (sales, dealers, galleries, private and auctions) are presently impossible to quantify, but at the same time there are obvious indicators and trends. Using international prices and auction sales as an indicator of rising market activity, it can be seen that modern art prices were up 22% in 2003. Contemporary art market is being driven by the arrival of a new demographic of younger collectors and buyers. â€Å"Modern art is currently the heart of the global art market. It is the densest and most profitable segment. 2011 was the best of the decade for the sale of modern works with particularly strong demand and an outstanding revenue total of $6.067B, representing 52.4% of total global art auction. In 2011, the revenue from Modern art was up $1.218 billion versus 2010 which was itself a record year† (Art Market Trends 2011

Iconic shape of building relates with old city fabric Essay

Iconic shape of building relates with old city fabric - Essay Example Garz is one of the more important cities for the Slovene, in Austria, and considered as even more symbolical than Ljubljana in Slovenia. A student city for the huge daytime population of its six universities, Garz is a mix of old, historical architecture and new one, with Kunsthaus representing the new side. It is currently used as an arts and culture center focused on contemporary arts (Cook and Fournier, 11). It fits as another modern architecture for Garz as it did not follow conventional building methods but took from ship building as well as design of curves as popularized by the CAD program. The curved designs were cast and the materials were made of fiber glass using pressurized structure. As a portion of a city, the Kunsthaus Garz continues a tradition that made Garz what it is today – a popular destination for rich cultural exploration. Some of the more historical buildings include the clock tower, Karl-Franzens Universitat or the Charles-Francis University, the Unive rsity of Graz, and another contemporary urban project the Mur Island. Built environment is integral on the formation of cities or the urbanization process.

Justice, Ethics and Law - critical evaluation of one of the three Essay

Justice, Ethics and Law - critical evaluation of one of the three topics below - Essay Example They insist that the idea of all people possessing certain rights by virtue of their humanity, even in the absence of legislation, is baseless and only loose talk.2 The ambiguity regarding the credibility of human rights dates back to the 18th century shortly after US Declaration of Independence in 1776, and thirteen years ahead, the French declaration of ‘the rights of man’. The US Declaration stated that every man is ‘endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights’ while the French Declaration asserted ‘men are born and remain free and equal in rights’. Not long afterwards, Jeremy Bentham, in his writings between 1791 and 1792,3 differed with the concept of human rights and called for its dismissal. Bentham claimed that the idea of human rights was borrowed from the Americans and was not practical. Even today, there is still widespread disagreement on issues relating to human rights. Most critics maintain that human rights lack coherence, cogency and legitimacy while some still point out grey areas such as social and economic rights.4 Amartya Sen5 proposes several guidelines for the elements of a human rights theory that adequately address the issue of legitimacy of human rights. I will consider these six guidelines as conclusions to arguments which he bases on one or more premises explained under each subheading. The paper will analyse each of these conclusions and their supporting premises and critically assess their legitimacy and any alternative suggestions. Sen claims that human rights are primarily ethical demands rather than legal commands.6 He makes this conclusion based on two premises. First, even though human rights have often resulted in legislation, it is considered a further fact, as opposed to a characteristic of human rights. Second, Sen states that human rights are agreements on certain ethical affirmations and the

Lit - Literature review Example eview of literature showed that previous studies have documented the reliability of relying on consumer profiling for marketers, in order to segment products for different customer segments successfully. The study also found that the brand image and the brand personality of a product are among the driving forces behind its demand. It’s a basic human desire to comprehend all about the nature of the self as a person, what one does and what they believe – apart from also enquiring the factors behind visible behaviour. In relation to the preferences of consumers, for some brands and products and not others, it has remained a matter of importance, to explore the self-associations that are made and their relationship to the consumer’s self-concept. For example, for a consumer who is physically fit (one who regards themselves an athlete) it is likely that they will purchase products that enforce their identity as an athlete. In light of the associations explained between self-concept and consumer behaviours, this report aims to establish the relationship between self concept and brand image and attachment, which are the main influencers of consumer purchasing behaviour. Towards delivering on the aim, the report will present a critical literature review with the aim of providing answers to the re search question: what can marketers and producers do to position products successfully among a majority of their target consumers? Through finding answers to the research question, the report is supposed to meet the objectives of exposing the process of developing brand image for products successfully and expose the relationship between brand image and the buying behaviour of consumers. The drive behind consumer behaviour, according to Virani (2013, p. 155), is what triggers a variety of identity-based effects and outcomes, including a heightened attention to identity-related stimulus; the consumer is more likely to recognize and shop for products that are normally

Elements of Leadership Styles - Coursework Example The characteristic features of a leader include his ability to withstand the opposition, make the right decisions, ability to hold on to the ground despite the difficulties, and unite people of different kind under one roof regardless of their social and racial differences. On a relatively different scale, the unions that are essential part of organizations seek a leader for putting forward their agendas and serving the rights of labors and workers. This form of leadership applies to the organizational leadership skills. The effective working of unions increases the throughput of the incumbent organization, at the same time lead to employees’ satisfaction. This all is subject to effective leadership skills (Daily, 2005). Leadership styles vary in nature, while some are carrot and stick based; others are purely incentive based, while the rest rely on equal treatment. The best amongst all are those that can bring the best out of an individual, be flexible and adaptive to the nature of changing environments all around (Mehrotra,

Post Confederation Canada Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Post Confederation Canada - Research Paper Example Although Canada was already an independent colony, British felt that there were internal political obstacles that she needed to solve. Consequently, the two conflicting parties, the Tories and the Clear Grits, came to unite in 18672. Nevertheless, this essay will describe Quasi-Federalism (and the subsequent types of federalisms) an aspect of Post Confederation Canada. To begin with, activities surrounding the Post Confederation Canada shaped Canadian history in many ways. One of the aspects of Post Confederation Canada that contributes to the shape of this country is the quasi federalism. Quasi federalism occurs when a state appears as if is divided into jurisdictions however is in fact a unitary state without any divided authority. Quasi federalism features involved contrasts between federalism and conservatism. For instance, immediately after confederation in Canada, the emerging partisan politics claimed that the strongest support for decentralization actually came from Ontario n ot Quebec or the Maritimes. In this instance, Canadian authority appeared as divided but in real sense, it was a pattern of rights between centralist’s supporters and conservatism, but whose view was same3. Quasi federalism in Post Confederation Canada produced another feature of partisan politics whereby the patterns of governance portrayed dominance in different levels of administration. In Post Confederation, features of political atmosphere dominance in Canada were prevalent. In this case, one political dominated the provincial level whereas opposition affirmed control at the federal level. Quasi federalism comprised of such features whereby, of the thirty years following Confederation in Canada, the Conservatives reigned in power for twenty-six years. A political scientist, Russell, argues that, in the case of contemporary politics Canada has experienced the same pattern of federal Conservative control even after the Mulroney Conservatives4. The major purpose of Russellà ¢â‚¬â„¢s point of this observation is to assert that provincial politics transcend significantly into federal politics. It is worthwhile to note that, quasi federalism in Post Confederation Canada was different from the American state governance. While American state governors faced restriction via series of strict checks and balances, it was ultimately different from quasi federalism state governance by which the main restrictive force found within the Canadian case was the continued rivalry found among regional interests5. However, even though quasi federalism led to economic transformation, however, dominated by the elites who did little to appeal to the wider public was constructive and contributed to a significant and essential period of nation building directly after the confederation. Cognitively, this economic growth in Post Confederation Canada helped shape the overall structure of the nation and the living standards of the fortunate. The evolution process of quasi federali sm in Post Confederation Canada is one of the most important features shaping the structure and functions of state governance. Throughout quasi federalism evolution, people could consider it hierarchical since its structural composition had central authority and regional subordinates. Instead, people considered quasi federalism as a system

Disney vs. Imane Boudlal Essay Example for Free

Disney vs. Imane Boudlal Essay Disneyland vs. Imane Boudlal HISTORY Disneyland is very large 160 acre amusement park located in Anaheim CA. Disneyland was created by Walt Disney on July 17, 1955, Walt Disney wanted to create a magical place where parents with children could go to the same place and have just as much fun as their children. Walt Disney had the vision that he wanted Disneyland to be like a fantasy land where dreams could come to life. Disneyland is a 17. 5 million dollar magic kingdom. Even though the park was a very expensive project, â€Å"I could never convince the financiers that Disneyland was feasible, because dreams offer too little collateral† said Walt Disney. Since Disney was a very expensive project, Walt Disney had some support from his own television show on ABC; it was called Walt Disney’s Disneyland. The TV series offered sneak peeks about the future Disneyland project before it was even finished. It took a full year of hard work to finish the project. Disneyland is well-known for having a strict employee dress code called â€Å"the Disney look†. This dress code was introduced to new employees in 1955 prior to the amusement park opening. Disneyland also calls their employees â€Å"cast members† in order to keep the magical theme going. The Disney look has changed over time, but yet also remained true to offering wholesome family entertainment in one of the world’s top vacation destination. To work at Disneyland, the potential cast member must first agree and understand the policy prior to being hired.

Ethical Issues in Paediatric Wards

Ethical Issues in Paediatric Wards Smith, a five-day-old newborn, experienced a decrease in oxygen saturation and abdominal distension. Abdominal radiograph indicated free air in abdomen. When obtaining the consent for surgery, the parents refused the use of blood or blood products, because both of them were Jehovah’s Witness (Meadow et al., 2010). There are no absolute rights or wrongs to this case, which is based on a synthesis of this clinical scenario. The aim of this essay is to explore the ethical and cultural issues in nursing practice. Because of these problems, there are more than one solution in clinical settings to preserve human lives free form blood transfusions without violating their beliefs. Ethics is a branch of philosophy concerned with the study of rational processes for decision-making. When the parents’ decision is not the best interest for the child, the paediatric nurse should advocate for him in order to protect his rights to receive treatment according to the Code of Ethics for Nurses in Australia (ANMC 2006). The first step for the nurse in resolving the ethical dilemma like this is to provide information to the parents honestly about the child’s diagnosis, treatments, outcomes and risks. This enable the parents to make free and informed decision (ANMC 2006; Janine William 2010). During the discussion between the health practitioners and the parents, fully explained situation may help the family realize that the decision may not the best choice for the child. Next, health practitioners should strive to remain truly objective and avoid all personal, racial, cultural, religious or other bias when counselling or caring the child and the family. The parents’ autonomy should also be respected during the practice (ANMC 2008b). Thirdly, nurses should respect of the parents’ competence. Competence implies the parents level of understanding that allows them to weigh up the ethical issues posed by a clinical situation, assimilate these and reach a rational decision. Culturally effective paediatric health care can be defined as the delivery of care within the context of appropriate physician knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of all cultural distinctions leading to optimal health outcomes. However, there sometimes has the conflict between the parental authority and the child’s best interests. On the one hand, Australia Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008a) states that nurses should respect the culture, values, beliefs, personal wishes, and decisions of the patients and their families. Moreover, a basic principle in law is that a minor cannot consent to medical treatment until he or she was of or above the age of 14 years old in New South Wales, 16 years old in South Australia or 18 years old in other states. As a result, the parents, or the legally pointed guardians of the child have the rights to make the decision for treatment (Janine William 2010). On the other hand, the patient must always come first, before any vested interes t of any third party including health practitioners as well as the parents, guardians, extended family and society. Brody and Aronson (cited in Tabak Zvi 2008) argue that the patient has the fundamental right to quality medical care and the best treatment. Zohar and Langham (cited in Tabak Zvi 2008) claim that parental consent to medical treatment may negate patient autonomy. In a conflict situation as described here, when informed consent is not forthcoming, the nurse’s important role in working is to seek an alternative decision (Tabak Zvi 2008). Where a parent or guardian refuses consent to use blood products in the emergency treatment of a child (less than 16 years of age), the local, state, territory or national legislation or guidelines in regarding consent for a medical procedure must apply (Australian and New Zealand Society of Blood Transfusion Ltd 2011). Slonim et al. (2008) states that the administration of blood products to children is a common practice in acad emic childrens hospitals; Complications associated with these transfused products are rare. When blood transfusions are deemed necessary for an immature minor. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that receiving blood from other people will damage their relationship with God. However, it is true that acute blood loss has been associated with increased mortality for decades; a blood transfusion is the best way of replacing the blood quickly (BloodSafe 2008). Due to this, several methods have been used to protect their autonomy in emergent situations where blood or blood product may be used. Office of the Public Advocate (2010) introduces the guideline of Jehovah’s Witnesses and Blood Transfusions to assist physicians and other health workers to deal with this kind of dilemma based on Guardianship and Administration Act 1986, Medical Treatment Act 1988 and Human Tissue Act 1982. In Victoria, most Jehovah’s Witnesses have a â€Å"No Blood Card†. It indicates that the person who hold this card will not receive blood or blood products in no circumstances (OPA 2010). Furthermore, there are blood transfusion alternatives, and pr actices that use no blood for elective or non-emergency surgery or as a result of traumatic injuries to address the medical needs of patients who did not wish to receive blood products or blood transfusions during medical care. The 2009 Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland guidelines recommend the method of cell salvage in cases where patients have refused to use allogeneic blood and blood products (cited in Ashworth Roscoe 2010). Goldberg and Drummond (2008) states administration of recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) is effective solution to treat Jehovah’s Witness patients with life-threatening bleeding associated with haemophilia or trauma. Schmitt el at. (2008) recommend the use of autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for high-dose chemotherapy without support of allogeneic blood products. In conclusion, clinical problems with significant ethical and cultural implications pose an ever increasing dilemma in everyday medical practice in the 21st century and rarely present a simple solution. The paediatric nurses’ role is to advocate the child’s best interest when the parents’ decision is contradictory. Individuals’ religions and cultural beliefs should be respect. In clinical settings, there are increasing options other than blood product transfusions for those who refuse blood transfusions. Accordia Global Health Foundation: Impact on Poverty

Accordia Global Health Foundation: Impact on Poverty Accordia Global Health Foundation is an NGO that is providing at all phase of the fieldwork cycle, promoting the importance and productiveness of the fieldwork, prime concern and understanding expressed in activity. They have crucial role in governance by encouraging and supporting applicable global health fact-finding, capital deploy for research administration of comprehension. Further, the participation of Accordia Global Health Foundation in research is proximate from understanding productivity as it takes the shape of collaboration with graduate institutions and committed research organisations. This paper will concentrate solely on the context of Accordia Global Health Foundation and Its aim to examine the extent to which the NGOs attempt in this globe of activity are effective in assisting to allay poverty. Accordia Global Health Foundation is a non-governmental and not-for profit organization whose birth began in the year 2000 and in collaboration with leading theoretical researcher clinician who are dedicated to analyzing more partnership, Africa- command method to conquer HIV/AIDS and mental health disorder in the sub-Saharan countries. The goal of Accordia Global Health Foundation NGO is to completely attenuate hardship and advance growth through mediation within growing nations, and distinguished by financial and scientific reinforcement for socio-economic plan and projects, reinforcing in -nation ability to render health teaching, prevention fact-finding, and care and Build affirmation-based model that are directly important in resource- restricted setting and can be reproduced throughout countries Accordia Global Health Foundation is a non-governmental NGO fostered by Dr Merle and funded by good hearted individuals. He fostered the theoretical Alliance for AIDS Care and prevention in Africa to establish the dimension to campaign the proceeding HIV/AIDS disaster in Uganda and in Africa countries. In 2003, he collaborated with other inspired to found. In 2004, the Accordia Global Health Foundation collaborated with Pfizer Inc. And initiated the infectious disease institute IDI at Makerere University Kampala Uganda. The Infectious Disease Institute assist as a paragon for support, territorial core for quality in health, while changing the standard of health across the continent. Currently, Accordia relentlessly continue to expand and enact inventive health ideas, while working to establish and sustain countries in Africa. Most importantly, Accordia Global Health Foundation is an NGO that uses heart touching images to establishes encourage and continues to maintain African -conced ed health establishment, equipping local solution to fact-finding , orientation, education and care via the Institute for Child Wellness in African-Launch Campaign; that is aimed at transforming the existence of children in Malawi by funding children so they can break the gird of hardship, declining health, and poor education in the future to come. Accordia agenda are distinguished by a much considerable variation of motive and process than are programs and agenda of formal organizations. They are also much compact in regards to number of beneficiaries. These elements tend to increase a perspective that each interceding is special, or practically so, thereby de-emphasizing any possible deterrent that might be assimilated for future interventions. This decrease the advantage that it is presumed to derived. (Jean Schensul, 2012), emphasized that NGOs are especially able to behave quickly to surfacing health issues, inherent and humanoid generated calamity. No doubt that Accordia NGO development in Africa nation has seen a stable growth in the recent years to pervade the huge gaps between the rich and the poor in the country. Urged by enthusiasm regarding a particular reason they support it by dedication ad drive. While the reach of their service cannot equivalent that of the governments organization, the excellence of care and th eir endeavor in reaching out to the diverse followers, specifically those who are biased against such as individuals with mental health disorder, give them a clear edge. Notwithstanding, the significant problems encountered in expanding the mental health programs , it is fulfilling to recognize the accomplishment made by Accordia Global Health Foundation are dispersed across the nation, although there are considerable figure in suburban city. (Roger Riddel) stated that working to reduce hardship through the furtherance of long term growth is itself distance from effortless assignment. I agree with this because more importantly, Accordia NGO share an assimilation of the growth process far broader than simply the providing of prevention. They accept the perspective that increasing the quality of living for the poor in a maintainable way require the poor gaining more capability through community organization, education, physical and technical resources). Accordia NGO believes that in framing what is achievable, they need to promote a suitable habitat for applicable research needs a health structure that is encouraging and contributing fund possibilities . It also needs reality of culture affirmation- producing and evidence- built fact-finding. There must exist a healthy alliance between communities, and researchers system to share knowledge, and experience. However, Accordia Global Health Foundation is not without problems in trying to frame what they are not able to attain .Not only is the distribution of service individualized, but plan -setting is mandated. Transferring and multi-layered resolution making can produce competencies. Further, they commit non or vey insufficient of their initiative to communicating this area of growth problem , since occasionally they examine it to be less essential than assisting to advocate growth within countries, in regard as an outcome of discourse with the specific donors or funders. Anthropologist Lisa Markowitz, stated that comprehending multinational process demands for multilocal, creative fact-finding action plan that both express individuals understanding of change and examine the interconnecting structures. Supplying purpose teaching and family counseling in expert profession such as social skill orientation and woodworker are interest assumed. While delighting themselves on specifically dip lomatic to the wants of the poor in growing countries and on responding rapidly to these. This combined with severe compulsion from donors reduces the project planning evaluation or attainable period, and to keep expenditure down, means that the aim of the programme or projects are repeatedly express in phrases which are rather common, or which are changed, often considerable , throughout the entire programmes. The more inexplicit the aims, the strenuous it is to present assessment with vivid-cut finish. This also decreases the advantage for coming interventions that is presumed to be gain from the research. To conclude, I believe that there is necessity for Accordia Global Health Foundation and other NGOs to be more successfully included in the areas of health research in order to expand the prospective benefits of research. And with revive sense of purpose and general goal, they can make lasting and strong effort in decreasing the disease problem of the worlds most impacted populace through successful fact-finding action. And they can assist to create a frame of working practices and teaching that will decrease the chance of failure and increase the possibility of success for organization directed to community, countries development.

China and Free Trade :: essays research papers

China and Free Trade In the International Business class, free trade has been the cornerstone for economic prosperity. But sometimes free trade can flood the market with cheaper products, causing financial problems for companies in this country. Often, the U.S. government will set up a tariff to help the American companies. But is this the best solution? This is the topic of the article, Bush’s China-Trade Dilemma by Neil King, Jr. published November 14, 2002 in â€Å"The Wall Street Journal.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Since China joined the World Trade Organization last year, it has become the third largest supplier of goods and services imported to the United States. Many U.S. companies are complaining that China is selling the items below cost and want Congress to impose duties. They accuse China of breaking the free-trade agreement that it made when it joined the WTO. Trade expert, Gary Hufbauer, says, â€Å"It is just a matter of time before we have a repeat of the Japan trade battles, but this time with China.†   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  But many in Washington believe that if the U.S. files a grievance against China with the WTO, other countries will follow and the WTO system will become overwhelmed with complaints against China. As one U.S. official stated, â€Å"I’m not sure anyone wants to be the first in line to whack China at the WTO.† Overall, China has a good free trade record and is really making an effort to join in the world economy. But China’s success has hurt some U.S. companies and talk of protectionism has started in the U.S. So what does Bush do? The administration praises free trade, but is seriously considering implementing tariffs for protection on certain items. Is this a contradiction? There is another complication that needs to be addressed. Many of the companies that manufacture in China are really American owned, such as Motorola Inc. How will this affect what does the Bush administration will do? Most of China’s companies are backed by foreign investors. China is eliminating trade barriers, cutting import tariffs, and relaxing restrictions on trading licenses.

Free Pride and Prejudice Essays: Life and Love :: Pride Prejudice Essays

Life and Love in Pride and Prejudice How would life be different if you lived in the early 1800s in a small town of England? How did the courtship rituals exist at that time? These questions are the main subjects of the book, Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen, who wrote the book about the time that these things took place. When you open to the first page and begin reading, the Bennet family is instantly introduced, along with Mr. Bingley. The Bennet family , which is composed of parents who generally have opposite opinions, and four daughters, each with their own special abilities, play the main role, especially the second daughter Elizabeth. The whole story is narrated through her point of view, so the opinions of other people that eventually become your own are taken from whom Elizabeth is close to and whom she dislikes. That brings us to the other characters, namely the Bingley family and Mr. Darcy. The Bingley family represents a very wealthy family, whose son would be a prize for any girl, and who is deeply interested in Jane, the eldest, beautiful Bennet daughter. The family though doesn't believe the Bennet's to be of a high enough standard, and move their brother to London to distract him with Mr. Darcy's sister, who supposedly was as unlikable as Mr. Darcy himself. Disliked by many because of his pompousness and pride, Mr. Darcy ruined his chances with Elizabeth for himself. In his own desire, he would have easily married her, she even hated to dance with the man. This type of love triangle, with one person liking a certain someone, but having to settle with someone else, happens throughout the book, just with different people. Most of the time all the characters were either in the a household or at a formal party where these loves, courtships, and dislikes began. This form of settings in the book I found rather boring, and it made it very difficult for me to continue reading, though I now know it is Jane Austen style to not have much action but to develop more of the character's personalities. This book is a great suggestion if you love to really understand a character and her feelings towards others. The neat idea is what Austen did with the title of the book. With this book, "Pride and

Brave New World :: essays research papers

I wrote this paper in my english class after reading 'A Brave New World': On the very last page of Aldous Huxley’s book, A Brave New World, he describes John as swinging slowly in circles after hanging himself (Huxley 259). It’s believed that Huxley’s main point of this ending to his story was to tell his readers that after all John’s effort of trying to change the brave new world, it was profoundly hopeless and the only thing left to do was to give up. This image creates a belief that Huxley was trying to warn his readers that the future was going to hold a extreme amount of advance technology in science, that would eventually turn into a dystopian world. When Huxley stresses the high amount of sex/drug usage and conditioning in his book, it was to show that these are highly used to help people live in a better society. The scary part is that most of Aldous Huxley’s predictions on the future were closely factual.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although Huxley wrote many forms of literature, they all held the common theme of â€Å"meaning and possibilities of human life and perception† (Huxley 260). After the disease Huxley received when he was 16 years old that ended his dream of becoming a doctor, he also remained essentially scientific in his literature. Julian Huxley, Aldous Huxley’s brother, believed that â€Å"science and mysticism were overlapping and complementary realms in Aldous Huxley’s mind† (Huxley 262). This explains where Huxley came up with the idea of Hatcheries and Conditioning. Which was an excellent way he began his book in a utopian world.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first chapter in A Brave New World starts out with the director and his assistant giving a tour to a group of boys of the Hatching and Conditioning Centre (Huxley 3). At the centre is where the boys learn all about the Bokanovsky process and how they’re conditioned into five different caste. The director then explains that this conditioning helps each person love what caste they are conditioned into, whether they become leaders or factory workers. Later, when Mustapha Mond and John Savage discuss the outcomes of conditioning, John expresses that he disagrees with it all. John explains how conditioning only manipulates peoples minds and how it takes away their right to make their own decisions ( Pradas par 11). In a way, Huxley speaks out a lot through John’s character in this chapter.

Clinical Practice Essay

Clinical practice is of outmost significance because this is the site where students can turn theory into practice, students can interact with patients and families, and face the real world of medicine. It is significant and useful to reflect upon assessment practices to evaluate students in clinical setting. For this purpose, this paper analyzes three articles relevant to the clinical practices by the nursing students, and the role they should play outside the classroom, and who should evaluate them in the clinical setting. This paper also features suggestions and recommendations derived from the reflections and analyses made on the articles reviewed. Article one. The ongoing search for best practice in clinical teaching and learning: A model of nursing students’ evolution to proficient novice registered nurses. This article by Edgecombe and Bowden (2009) features current search to implement best practices in clinical teaching and identifies those positive and negative elemen ts as well as the intrinsic and extrinsic factors that make an impact on nursing students’ learning process, and their development and growing process from students to proficient novice nurses Rns. The study was conducted at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, and involved 111 students. A model was created intending to assist students in their transformation from students to RNs, the Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model was designed as an innovative approach for clinical teaching. This approach focuses on the specific use of the clinical setting available for learning practices in health settings such as mental health centers, acute medical departments, and surgical wards or community health organizations. The DEU follows the principles of adult learning of modifying, relearning, and replacing knowledge, skills, strategies and values through experience gained, and reflections made (Edgecombe & Bowden, 2009). The DEU foundational philosophy relies on the sound relationships between clinicians and academicists, valuing their contributions aimed at establishing the optimal learning environment for nursing students. Also valuing nursing students’ views. The model described in the article might have influences on the development of future curriculums, upgrading of staff and on different approaches used to place staff in adequate positions. The model can also serve to do research works intended to the teaching and learning process in the realm of nursing educ ation (Edgecombe & Bowden, 2009). Among the elements analyzed in this article, the authors highlighted  the emphasis students placed on the importance of belonging to a place, to feeling valued and trusted. These positive feelings, greatly influence the students’ learning processes. However, when a student feels isolated, neglected from the regular clinical staff or heavily or unfairly critized or scoffed at his/her performance, these actions have a negative impact on the learning stage at this specific clinical setting (Edgecombe & Bowden, 2009). It is important to observe tha bulling, and lateral violence at the workplace exist in some hospitals and health settings, as indicated by Broome and Williams (2011), especially with novice nurses or new nurses when they begin working for the first time in a clinical setting. In this regard, Broome and Williams (2011) state that in some health care settings the problem takes place when some experierenced nurses complaining about novice nurses’ performance, and the lateral violence develops in different ways and causes serious impacts on the victims. Dellasega (2009) considers that lateral violence manifests in cover or overt verb al and non verbal aggression episodes. Reflecting upon these topics among the negative effects that a toxic environment may cause to nursing students as indicated above by Edgecombe and Bowden, (2009), the author of this paper also believe that bullying and lateral violence can also create a harmful atmosphere for the learning process among students who develop their practices in a clinical setting. Article 2. Developing a successful nursing objective structured clinical examination. This article written by McWilliam and Botwinski (2010) evaluates the basic components for developing relevant and useful nursing objectives in the clinical area for nursing students, but these authors failed to highlight some significant aspects of high-skilled therapeutic work, the importance of interpersonal aptitudes, and blending some key information into practices in clinical settings. The article deals with assessing the clinical skills that students may acquire in different health scenarios. This practice is vital because students can work and learn from different scenarios, patients and diseases (Mcwilliam & Botwinski, 2010). According to Mcwillian & Botwinski (2010), clinical educators should pass on their experience gained to students, and at the same time, should ensure that patients also gain safe nurturing consideration. In achieving these goals, the delivery of clinical instructions should be imbuied of professional ability, proper interpersonal relations, and adequatin g aspects  of temperament. Educators should have a clear idea on the model that may guide them turning a speficic scenario into a learning experience, and also into an evaluative procedure that will be mutually beneficial for the educator and the nursing students. Nurse’s decision-making abilities derived from critical thinking and evidence-based practice have been analyzed by various analysists who have reflected that choice making is a studied skill that nurse educators should teach, but there are few research intended to investigate the choices made by nursing students. If more information of this topic is available, educators will be capable of designing a more proper curriculum that also covers the developing of this attitude geared to teach students how to make better choices (Mcwillian & Botwinski, 2010). The author of this paper believes that tools to furnish the nursing students to develop critical thinking and choice making are a vital part of the curriculum. It is true that not all topics can be covered in a curriculum as stated by Mcwillian and Botwinski (2010), but decision making process and a good guidance are crucial elements of a proper and adequate nursing training in clinical practice. Article three. Evaluation in clinical practice using an innovative model for clinical teachers The article features the Reflective Interaction Analysis in Nursing Education (RIANE) Model which addresses the problems faced by clinical teachers of how to turn information-rich interactions in clinical practice into objective information using a format that provides valuable feedback and helps evaluation. The Model facilitates the translation of the interactions for clinical teachers that occurs on a daily basis with nursing students, recorded in notes for their further use in formative and summative evaluations (Zafir & Nissim, 2011). The article discusses the use of this model in the training of a group of nurses that will become clinical teachers. The RIANE model motivates clinical teachers to see the students’ clinical interactions as another way to contribute to the learning process, as an educational opportunity. It provides certain order in an amount of information difficult to manage by clinical teachers who have to find a way to make this information accessible to students (Zafir & Nissim, 2011). The author of this paper considers that allowing the students to learn from their daily experiences, enabling them to provide feedbacks, and being heard, are great positive contributions for educational purposes in the  clinical setting, and the clinical instructor can keep track of their students by recording notes while the students also render their clinical collaboration. Zafrir and Nissim (2011) believe that the proper role clinical teachers should play is that of guidance, support, inspiration, and facilitating learning. Also these authors consider that an environment of mutual trust and confidence should prevail in supporting students’ process of learning and growth. There are several models for clinical instructors and faculty to evaluate students outside the classroom: The clinical instructor can use the modality of preceptor ,one to one relation, in which an experienced nurse serves as a preceptor for a certain period of time. The clinical teaching associate (CTA) model uses a staff nurse collaborating with a faculty to train a given number of students for clinical practices. The paired model features one-student, one patient model, a variation of the preceptor model, and a student begins clinical practice within specific days supervised by a staff nurse for a practicum experience (Billings and Halsted, 2009). Other models for clinical instructors to evaluate students outside the classroom, and on occasions, jointly with the faculty during their clinical practices are the clinical teaching partnership where a form of collaboration is established, the service institution contributes with a clinical nurse specialist and the university constribut es with a faculty member. Adjunt faculty is another model in which the faculty is a health care professional hired by a service setting in the modality of part-time. This professional can serve in several roles as supervisor, mentor, guest lecturer, and preceptor, and can also render a collaboration in research works (Billings and Halsted, 2009). The role that a student should play in the evaluation process should be that of a student that prepares for the clinical experience, establishes good relationships and exhibits proper communication skills, learns and accepts feedbacks and adapts to the assigned clinical setting and advances in his/her performance. The unsuccessful student in the clinical experience is unprepared for this activity, does not establish communication efficiently, breaks legal and ethical practices, uses practices that are not safe, his/her adaptation to the assigned clinical setting is poor (Lewallen and DeBrew, 2012). The students under a clinical practice can act in the following scenarios: labs, homeless shelters, camps, agencies that render social services often involving interdisciplinary health settings. The clinical teacher-student interaction is a significant part of this practice (Billings & Halsted, 2009). The author of this paper believes that students should embrace this relation, and take a good advantage of this opportunity to learn at large all what is taught by the instructor and assimilate the experience gained while doing the clinical practice, since the student is exposed to several medical situations. Conclusion The three articles reviewed contribute to make a good analysis of the possibilities of evaluating students in clinical settings. The clinical area is significant in training novice nurses because they are in contact with the real world and can interact, not only with patient but with their families and the professional colleagues and other related staff they will be working with during their professional life. The practice in clinical settings enables students also to be more confident in themselves, because after they can apply theory into practice will feel more capable in their profession, and become more autonomous decision makers. The students will have the possi bility to raise their caring abilities, and play more realistic roles based upon their practice.
